Progress 2 - The World Food Problem

This is the second report on the reading progress of "The World Food Problem". In the last report , I explained the difference between undernutrition and malnutrition. This time, I will be explaining how researchers around the world tried to measure the extent of hunger .  There has been numerous attemps to measure the extent of hunger in the past, both nationally and internationally. However, it was very difficult to measure it precisely due to its difficulty and complexity of the conducted surveys. The First World Food Survey by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was first conducted in 1946, and there hasn't been much reliable datas before than that. Therefore, some alternatives had to be used when researchers tried to measure the extent of hunger.  The first method was to measure the weight and height of the people in the countries that were said to be suffering from hunger, and compare the numbers with the same datas from the developed countries . It was ...

Progress 1 - The World Food Problem

On this post, I'm going to share the reading progress of the book I have introduced on October 26, 2023 .  The most important thing to note in the first few chapters of the book was the definition of hunger. The first thing that we imagine when we hear the word "hunger" is probably the image of barely fed children in Africa . While that is definitely considered as hunger caused by undernutrition, the author of the book claims that undernutrition is not only the type of hunger .  The other type of hunger is what is so called a "malnutrition" . Malnutrition means one is lacking some sort of essential nutrition in their diet. To make it more understandable, you are simply suffering from undernutrition if you are not eating enough . But let's say you are only eating rice until your stomach is full. You may have enough calories for the day but you would get sick very soon because you can not cover every nutrition that is essential to your body just by eat...

Restaurant Review Analysis

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've done  a restaurant review on Menya Nishi Muku Samurai , but recently I had an opportunity to do an restaurant review analysis on my assingments at uni, so I'd like to share the outcome of the analysis. I analyzed two reviews , one is written, and the other one is visual . The written one that I analyzed was reviewing a restaurant called Dirty French . You can access to the original post on The New York Times here , but there's a paywall. Overall, the review wasn't something I was expecting from a restaurant review. It was very detailed, neutral and professional . The reviewer described wide range of foods on the menu as well as the exterior, interior, and the atmosphere of the restaurant in detail, which allows us to visualize the foods and the atmosphere of the restaurant in our head.  Assuming from the broad, unique and elegant vocabularies that reviewer uses, the readers of this review are wealthy and well educated....

Hungry Planet - Australia

On 12/7 I did a presentation about an Australian family and their food consumption featured on the book called Hungry Planet in the english class, and I thought it would be a great idea to share it in this blog, so here we go. The pictures above show the typical Australian foods . You may have heard about Vegemite , the fermented spread, but there are much more than just that! Timtam , the chocolate bar is a classic Australian snack, and just like in Great Britain they eat meat-pies, fries, burgers, and grilled chicken . The unique one is fairy bread , a simple sugar toast commonly eaten by children at birthday parties in Australia. Also, major part of Australian cuisine is based on seafoods due to its location. This is the Molly family and their weekly consumed foods . In the middle stands Emily , the mother of the family. The man next to her is the father John , and the girl is their daughter Nathalie . Finally, the boy staring at the huge vegetable is Sean , smallest child of t...

Restaurant Review - MENYA NISHI MUKU SAMURAI

Recently, a Ramen restaurant has opened near my apartment. I was eager to try it out, so I took the opportunity by doing a first-time restaurant review on this blog. The restaurant is called Men-ya Nishi Muku Samurai ( 麺屋ニシムクサムライ ), and it is located near Hatagaya station (Keio New Line). For those who are interested in visiting this restaurant, here is the exact address: 2 Chome-56-1 Hatagaya, Shibuya City, Tokyo 151-0072 I ordered a white chicken broth Ramen with additional sliced pork (Char-Siu Tori Paitan Ramen, チャーシュー鶏白湯ラーメン ) and a sliced pork bowl (Char-Siu don, チャーシュー丼 ). The price was 1600 yen in total.   First, I had a sip for the Ramen broth, and as I was expecting the broth was somewhat creamy . Like a Tonkotsu broth (pork-bone broth) but not as strong flavor as Tonkotsu broth is. Then I tried the noodles. Not too thick, relatively soft noodles they were but nothing was very special. Now it was the time to give it a little kick with the other ingredients. ...

Class Picknicing

On the 2nd week of the English course in my university, we had a nice picnic day during the class but I forgot to mention it in this blog, so here we go. For someone who has visited this blog by surfing internet (if there is any), the man in full-black outfit on the picture above is me .  Each of us brought at least 1 food, some bought and others cooked themselves. Since our professor is vegan, I cooked a vegan chili con carne for the picnic. It turned out to be a great combination with the tortilla chips that one of my classmates brought. All of the other foods were very tasty too. After a nice meal session, we had an activity session . The professor brought juggling equipments with him, and many of us gave it a try. I tried it too, but it was way harder than it looked and I was only able to manage 2 jugglers by the end of the class. I'd love to try it again if there's an opportunity. The picnic was very fun, and I wish we could have another session of those, maybe outsi...
